Here are step-by-step instructions for finding a scholarly article:

  1. First, go to the Baker Library's website (Online Resources Subject List)
  2. Click on one of the subject areas to see a list of the databases in that area
Note:Look for ProQuest, Infotrac, EBSCO, or Elsevier in the name of the database--all of these databases (outside of the News/Current Events section) have an option to limit your search to scholarly articles.
  3. Select one of the databases to begin your search
  4. Log in with your barcode number (On the back of your Baker student ID)
  5. Enter your search terms in the search box(es)
  6. Click the box labeled "scholarly", "peer-reviewed", "academic", or "refereed". These will usually be  located below the search box.
  7. Hit the search button.
All the articles you find this way will be considered scholarly.

IMPORTANT: Stay away from Editorials, Letters to the Editor, Book Reviews and similar items. THESE ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE SOURCES FOR A RESEARCH PAPER, EVEN IF THEY ARE FROM A SCHOLARLY JOURNAL.

If you are looking for scholarly books, you can check the Library catalog by clicking on the Books/Ebooks from the Baker Library's website

Scholarly books will:

  • List an author's credentials
  • Be published by a university press
  • and includes lots of in-text reference citations and long bibliographies of their sources
