Q

Where and how do I find peer-reviewed journals, because the ones I have seen are extremely hard to understand and I have no idea what they are saying?

Answer

Thank you for your question about peer-reviewed journals.

A peer-reviewed journal is a publication that publishes scholarly research in a specific discipline. The articles are written by experts in the field and then the articles are reviewed by other experts in the field before they can be published in the journal. (This is where the term peer-reviewed comes from).

It is true that peer-reviewed journal articles are more advanced reading material in the subject. They generally discuss specific research or describe an experiment. They are not general overviews of a topic. Here is a good YouTube video on how to read a peer-reviewed journal article: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SmOq6gENPM

As to where to find peer-reviewed articles, you will use the library's databases.

  1. From the Library's Homepage, click on Find Articles & Databases
  2. Select the category that best suits your research. For example, you may want to select Medical or Business.
  3. Once you have selected a category, you will see a list of databases.
  4. Select a database such as: Academic OneFile OmniFile Full Text Select, or ProQuest.
  5. Look for a box to check that will limit your results to "peer-reviewed."

If you are having trouble finding peer-reviewed articles on your topic, contact your Campus Library/ARC.
