Is it proper APA style to use first person?

Answer

Thank you for your question about first person in APA style.

The general answer is that first person is not usually used for Baker College papers, although there are some exceptions. (See below for exceptions.)

First person style may be used in the following types of papers:

  • Personal reflection
  • Personal response
  • Personal experience

Almost everything else you will write at Baker College will require a third person style and this information is usually mentioned on your instructor's syllabus or assignment sheet. If it is not mentioned, then it is generally safest to assume third person style.

The APA blog has an article called Use of First Person in APA Style.
