Q. When using APA style, when do I need to use page numbers in citations?

Answer

In APA, use a page number for:

  • In-text citations when citing a direct quote of the source material.
  • When paraphrasing material, a page number is not required.

To see examples of the difference between direct quote and paraphrasing in-text citations:

  • See the Sample Paper on the APA Help guide
  • As well as the examples on the Reference & In-text Citation Examples.
