Are page or paragraph numbers used in the APA format for in-text citations if you are paraphrasing the source?

Answer

Page and paragraph numbers should be included in an in-text citation if it is a direct quote, but not for a paraphrased source.

Regardless of whether it is a quote or a paraphrase, the citation should include:

  • An in-text citation with the author (or part of the title, if there is no author).
  • The publication date of the source.

For example, a citation for a paraphrase may look like:

 (Smith, 2018).

While a citation for a quotation would look like:

(Smith, 2018, p. 74).
