I need help on the how to cite a poem in an essay. I am breaking the poem down in the essay.

Answer

To cite a poem in an essay according to The Writer's Brief Handbook:

"For poems, first give the part or division reference, if there is one, and then the line numbers.  Use a period with no space between."

Example:

In Song of Myself, Walt Whitman emerges larger than life itself, "a kosmos, of Manhattan the son,/Turbulent, fleshy, sensual, eating, drinking, and breeding." (24.1-2).

The / refers to a line break in the poem.
