Q. Can you help me find information on the history of human services from the 1800's to current?


To find current information about a career, visit the Occupational Outlook Handbook.

Another source is the Gale Virtual Reference Library to search the term, "Human Services" or the more historical "Social Work" or "Social Services."

To find historical information you will need to think about the types of services administered through the field now known as "Human Services."  Even though that label is modern, the concepts such as public assistance, health programs, disease control, etc., have been around since the 1800s.

To find books, visit the Book Catalog and use keywords:

  • Disaster relief
  • Family services
  • Public health
  • Public safety
  • Public welfare
  • Social services

To find articles, see the Online Resources Page. Search using one of the keywords from above and include the term history and/or the term United States.
