Q. What is an ellipse? What about ellipses?

Answer

See the explanations below for Writing ellipses or a Math ellipse:

Writing ellipses:  (from the APA Style Blog)

Ellipses are three dots in the middle of a sentence. Their purpose is to let the reader know that some part of a quotation has been left out.

If text is omitted from the middle of a sentence, it is indicated with three ellipses.

Example:

Original:   He came home, with dogs and parakeet in tow, just in time for supper.

With text omitted:  He came home . . . just in time for supper.
