When using APA style, when do I need to use page numbers in citations?

Answer

In APA, use a page number for:

  • In-text citations when using a direct quote of the source material.
  • When paraphrasing material, a page number is not required.

To see examples of the difference between direct quote and paraphrasing in-text citations:

  • Visit the APA Help guide.
  • Under Reference & In-text Citation Examples.
