I need to cite a quote that is inside of an article. Do I cite the author of the quote or the author of the article when I do the in-text citation?
Answer
To cite a source within a source:
- Name the original work and give a citation for the secondary source.
- Use the phrase as cited in.
- For example, citing a quotation from Jesse Smith in an article by Kelly Jones. Since you did not read Jesse Smith's original work, the citation is as follows:
Jesse Smith said, "Respect your elders..." (as cited in Jones, 2019, p. 3).
Only the source you read (by Kelly Jones) should appear on the References page.
