Q. What if two authors have the same last name?

Answer

If two authors have the same last name:

  • The References page should be alphabetized by their first name initials.

Example:

Johnson, E. (2011). . . .

Johnson, L. (2014). . . .

  • In-text citation (according to the Purdue Online Writing Lab):
  • To prevent confusion, use first initials with the last names.

Example:

(E. Johnson, 2011; L. Johnson, 2014)

Here are some other examples from the APA blog.
